[Greed]...the glut of misery...

“The world says: "You have needs -- satisfy them. You have as much right as the rich and the mighty. Don't hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your needs and demand more." This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe that this is freedom. The result for the rich is isolation and suicide, for the poor, envy and murder.
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Our current (#capitalist) economy is driven by spending huge amounts(advertising) to trick people into thinking that happiness is about buying things, and at the same time insisting that the only way to have a better, stronger economy is to produce more goods for people to buy so they’ll have jobs and get enough money to buy these things.

“Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
