Creating Heaven or Hell on Earth: A New Thought Perspective

Michael Corthell

In  New Thought philosophy, the concepts of heaven and hell are not seen as distant, otherworldly realms to be encountered after death. Instead, they are understood as states of mind, directly influenced by our thoughts, beliefs, and consciousness. This perspective shifts the responsibility of creating heaven or hell away from external forces or divine judgment and places it squarely in the hands of each individual. Through our daily choices and inner attitudes, we hold the power to create our own heaven or hell on Earth. Understanding this principle is not only liberating but also profoundly transformative, empowering us to shape our lives and experiences in alignment with the highest ideals.

The Power of Thought

Central to New Thought philosophy is the assertion that thought is a creative force. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,” the Bible states, and this idea is a cornerstone of New Thought. Our thoughts shape our perception of reality, influence our emotions, and, consequently, guide our actions and experiences. When we allow our minds to dwell on thoughts of fear, anger, resentment, and despair, we create a personal hell. These negative thought patterns can lead to suffering, conflict, and a sense of separation from others and from a higher purpose. Conversely, when we cultivate thoughts of love, gratitude, peace, and abundance, we create a personal heaven, characterized by joy, harmony, and a deep sense of interconnectedness with all life.

Heaven and Hell as States of Mind

In New Thought, heaven and hell are understood not as places but as internal conditions that we experience based on our state of mind. Hell is not a fiery pit into which we are cast for eternity; it is a state of inner turmoil, confusion, and suffering brought about by negative and limiting beliefs. These beliefs may include feelings of unworthiness, fear of failure, resentment towards others, or a sense of hopelessness. When we are trapped in these states, our lives reflect that inner chaos. We experience conflict in our relationships, dissatisfaction in our work, and a lack of meaning and purpose.

Heaven, on the other hand, is a state of inner peace, joy, and contentment. It is the realization of our inherent divinity and the recognition of the divine in others. When we embrace thoughts of love, compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude, we align ourselves with the higher frequencies of heaven. This alignment brings about a sense of well-being, fulfillment, and harmony. Our outer circumstances may not always be perfect, but our inner state remains calm and centered. In this way, heaven is not a distant reward but a present reality that we can experience here and now.

The Role of Consciousness

New Thought emphasizes the role of consciousness as the primary reality. It suggests that everything in the physical world is a manifestation of consciousness. Therefore, by changing our consciousness—by altering our thoughts and beliefs—we can change our reality. This is not mere wishful thinking; it is a profound recognition of the creative power inherent in human consciousness. When we elevate our consciousness to focus on the good, the true, and the beautiful, we begin to see those qualities reflected in our outer experience. This is how we create heaven on Earth.

Practical Steps to Create Heaven on Earth

Creating heaven on Earth is not a passive process but an active one that requires conscious effort and commitment. Here are some practical steps from a New Thought perspective to create a heavenly state of being:

  1. Mindfulness and Awareness: The first step is becoming aware of our thoughts and feelings. Practicing mindfulness allows us to observe our mental patterns and recognize when we are slipping into negative thought cycles. By bringing these thoughts into awareness, we gain the power to change them.

  2. Affirmations and Positive Thinking: Affirmations are a powerful tool in New Thought practice. By repeating positive statements about ourselves and our world, we can reprogram our subconscious mind and align our conscious thoughts with our desired reality. Phrases like “I am worthy,” “I am loved,” and “I am at peace” can help shift our mindset from negativity to positivity.

  3. Gratitude: Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is one of the most effective ways to create heaven on Earth. By focusing on the things we are thankful for, we elevate our mood and open ourselves to receiving more good in our lives. Gratitude shifts our focus from what is lacking to what is abundant.

  4. Forgiveness: Holding onto grudges and resentment creates a personal hell. Forgiveness is not about condoning bad behavior but about releasing the negative energy that keeps us bound to the past. Forgiveness frees us to move forward and create a more positive future.

  5. Service to Others: Engaging in acts of kindness and service not only helps others but also uplifts our own spirits. When we contribute to the well-being of others, we reinforce our sense of interconnectedness and purpose, which are essential components of a heavenly state of mind.

Conclusion

New Thought philosophy teaches that heaven and hell are not waiting for us after death but are present realities that we create through our thoughts and beliefs. By taking responsibility for our consciousness and choosing thoughts that align with love, peace, and abundance, we can create a heavenly experience on Earth. This perspective empowers us to be the architects of our destiny, demonstrating that our inner world is the key to the outer world we wish to inhabit. Through mindful practice and conscious choice, we can transform our lives into a reflection of the heaven within.
